153 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the statement by the National Adult Literacy Agency that funding for this important work (details supplied) is completely inadequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20858/97.
I agree that the funding provided for adult literacy needs to be increased. I recently allocated an additional £250,000 for the literacy service in respect of 1997 and am committed to further increases in the resources provided. The 1998 Estimates have not yet been finalised. I shall make an announcement on the position of the funding of the literacy service as soon as I am in a position to do so.
