Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

384 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Questions No. 359 and 379 of 12 November 1997 the developments which have taken place in relation to the acquisition of a premises or site for a new Garda station at Leixlip, County Kildare; if he has satisfied himself that the progress regarding the identification of a suitable location is adequately focused in order to obtain an early and satisfactory conclusion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21250/97]

The Office of Public Works have been asked by my Department to acquire a suitable site in Leixlip for a new Garda station. A number of sites have been identified which might be suitable. I understand that a number of approaches regarding the availability of these sites have been made to the owners and their response is awaited.

In the interim, I understand that the Office of Public Works have reached agreement with the owner of the building in which the present Garda substation is located on terms for a lease of the upper floor of the building and an additional ground floor area. Work on fitting out the premises as a temporary Garda station will be put in hand when the State obtains possession.
