Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Paul Bradford

Question:

509 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science the maximum rate of transport grant which will be made available to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; the reason a reduced rate has been approved; and if his Department will increase the grant to a level which will make it possible for the person to fund the required transport costs. [21528/97]

The level of transport grant payable in any individual case is determined by reference to the distance involved. In the case to which the Deputy refers, the distance involved warranted a transport grant of £1,250 and this has been offered to the child's parents.

However, I understand that proposals for alternative transport arrangements for the child have now been put to my Department. These proposals are currently being considered, in consultation with the school authorities and Bus Éireann, and I hope that a satisfactory arrangement can be arrived at as speedily as possible.
