Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Marian McGennis

Question:

60 Ms M. McGennis asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí currently deployed in the Inchicore area; the number detailed as community gardaí; the number attached to Operation Dóchas; the number of arrests for drug related activity in this area in the most recent three month and 12 month period for which information is available; and the way in which this compares with the previous three and 12 months. [20960/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Inchicore area is policed by the gardaí assigned to Kilmainham Garda station where the manpower strength, all ranks, as of 31 October 1997 was 72.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that three gardaí are assigned to the area as part of Operation Dóchas and in addition one garda is assigned to community policing duties. The area is also patrolled by members on foot patrol and mobile units. The district drug unit is paying attention to the area on a daily basis.

I am also advised by the Garda authorities that the number of drug related arrests for Kilmainham Garda station, which is inclusive of the Inchicore area, in the three month period September to November 1997 was 29 compared to 10 for the period September to November 1996 and the number of drug related arrests from January 1997 to November 1997 was 107 compared to 56 for the period January 1996 to December 1996.
