Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Income Tax.

Noel Ahern

Question:

184 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the percentage of taxpayers who pay income tax at the standard rate in the tax year 1997/98 and the estimated percentage for 1998/99 following recent budget changes. [22814/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the standard rate of income tax is the marginal tax rate of an estimated 63 per cent of taxpayers for the income tax year 1997-98. Assuming the enactments of the changes announced in the 1998 budget, the corresponding figure for the income tax year 1998-99 is expected to be of the order of 61.8 per cent.

These percentages include taxpayers who qualify for marginal relief.
