Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Speed Limits.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

259 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the maximum speed permitted on Irish roads; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that road signs at the exit from most Irish towns indicate that speed is unrestricted; and the steps, if any, he will take to replace unrestricted signs with signs which indicate the actual speed limit on the road concerned. [22904/97]

Speed limits apply to all Irish roads. A speed limit of 70 mph applies generally to motorways, a speed limit of 30 mph applies to roads in built up areas generally and special speed limits of 40 mph and 50 mph may be applied by local authorities on a selective basis. The general speed limit of 60 mph applies to all other roads.

The sign to indicate the general speed limit, which consists of a white disc crossed obliquely by a black bar, has been in use since 1969. My Department has not to date had representations to suggest that current traffic signage in relation to speed limits creates difficulties for road users.
