Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Galway Airport.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

53 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the current position in relation to the upgrading of Galway airport; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22795/97]

I recently announced the Government's decision to make £5 million of Exchequer funding available for infrastructural improvements at the regional airports, including Galway.

This funding will facilitate the completion in 1998 of essential upgrading of the infrastructure and facilities at these airports, thereby enhancing the prospects of attracting additional air services and tourism to these regions.

In the case of Galway airport, the works to be undertaken comprise major runway improvements, upgrading of lighting and standby power and provision of new navigational aids. Grant aid of £3.1 million is being provided for this purpose and I expect the works to commence early in the new year.
