Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inquest into Death.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

239 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when an inquest will be held into the death of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [23162/97]

As the Deputy may be aware, coroners are independent in the exercise of their quasi-judicial functions, including the holding of inquests.

The Coroners Act, 1962, sets out the circumstances under which a coroner shall hold an inquest.

However, I understand that in this case the coroner requested the State Pathologist to undertake a post mortem. This has been completed and the coroner is awaiting results before a date for the inquest can be arranged.
