Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployments.

Willie Penrose

Question:

242 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the current Garda manning levels at Garda stations (details supplied) in County Westmeath; his views on whether the current levels are adequate; if he will increase the strength at each of these stations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23166/97]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about providing the detailed information sought by the Deputy on the grounds of security and in the interest of crime prevention generally. I propose, therefore, to provide the details on a district basis.

I understand from the Garda authorities that the current Garda strength (as of 31-11-1997) of the district in question is 58 members (all ranks). The Garda authorities have informed me that the local divisional officer is satisfied that the best possible Garda service is being provided for the particular district with the current deployment of Garda personnel. However, I am assured by the Garda authorities that the deployment of personnel to particular stations is continually reviewed by them and changes made accordingly.
