Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

94 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence if he will support the Irish Red Cross campaign to develop a workshop in northern Kenya to provide artificial limbs for landmine victims. [23081/97]

My Department administers a yearly grant-in-aid to the Irish Red Cross Society. This grant covers general administration and staff salaries at the Society's headquarters, refund of the expenses incurred by the Society in maintaining the Naomh Aindrias Home for Refugees and the payment of the State's annual contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The grant-in-aid, however, is limited and does not extend to specific projects undertaken by the Red Cross Society. I fully endorse any campaign to alleviate the suffering of landmine victims.
