Question:

117 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of clergymen and women engaged full-time or otherwise as chaplains to the Defence Forces; the denominations involved; and the salaries paid in this regard. [23296/97]

There are 19 full-time chaplains serving with the Defence Forces, 18 of whom are Roman Catholic and one Church of Ireland. Other chaplains are engaged from time to time as the occasion demands.

The rates of pay for chaplains in the Defence Forces are as follows:
