Written Answers. - Motor Fuels.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

168 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the current regulations regarding the display of petrol and diesel prices; the date on which the most recent amendment came into force; the number of inspections of displays undertaken from 1 January 1997 to date in 1998; the number of prosecutions initiated; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1367/98]

Legislative controls in relation to the display of petrol and diesel prices are contained in the Retail Price (Diesel and Petrol) Display Order, 1997 — S.I. No. 178 of 1997 — and the Consumer Information (Diesel and Petrol) (Reduction in Retail Price) Order, 1997, — S.I. NO. 179 of 1997. Both orders came into operation on 19 May, 1997.

I have been informed by the Director of Consumer Affairs that a total of 1856 inspections took place in 1997. Eight traders have had prosecutions initiatied against them. In 1998, 30 inspections have taken place to date. No prosecutions have been initiated as yet.
