Written Answers. - Alcoholic Drink Prices.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

169 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the current regulations regarding the display of alcoholic drink prices; the date of the most recent amendment to the regulations; the number of inspections of displays undertaken from 1 January 1997 to date in 1998; the number of prosecutions in this period; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1368/98]

The regulations regarding the dispaly of alcoholic drink prices are the Retail Price (Beverages in Licensed Premises) Display Order, 1976 — S.I. No. 146 of 1976 — which came into effect on 19 July 1976.

I have been informed by the Director of Consumer Affairs that a total of 2,086 inspections took place in 1997. Forty eight traders were prosecuted for breach of the order. In 1998, a total of 50 inspections have taken place to date. No prosecutions have yet taken place.
