Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hoax Calls Prosecutions.

Michael Finucane

Question:

223 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if any person has been traced and prosecuted as a result of the 53 hoax phone calls made to the Irish Marine Emer- gency Service in 1997; and if he will make a state- ment on the matter. [1479/98]

I can confirm that a total of 53 hoax calls were made to the Irish Marine Emergency Service during 1997.

It is a matter for the Director of Telecom- munications Regulation to determine the nature of any investigation into these matters.

I understand that while no prosecution has, as yet, been initiated in regard to any of these inci- dents a definite line of inquiry is being pursued in relation to one particular call.
