Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Port Development.

Michael Finucane

Question:

224 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if the design and costing investigation has been completed for Killybegs Harbour, County Donegal; the cost of the project; the developments, if any, which are scheduled to take place; the funding required to carry out these developments; and the timescale for carrying out these developments. [1486/98]

A detailed consultancy study of infrastructural requirements at Killybegs Fishery Harbour Centre has been carried out and found that a major development programme, costing up to £20 million, is required if existing and future needs of harbour users are to be serviced effec- tively. The consultants recommended that an outer habour facility, with significant additional berthage, be developed adjacent to Rough Point.

I have indicated my commitment to seeking the additional funding required to address the development needs of the harbour and I am pur- suing the matter as a priority.

Question:

225 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will outline details of the ports that benefit under the fishery harbour capital development programme for 1998 and 1999; the type of works that will be carried out; the estimated value of the work at each of the ports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1487/98]

Enda Kenny

Question:

250 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his Department's pro- gramme for fishery harbour development for 1998; the amount of money allocated by him for this programme; and the plans, if any, he has to deal with the number of applications received from all local authorities to date. [1575/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 225 and 250 together.

A sum of £2.965 million has been made avail- able for development of fishery harbours during 1998. A programme of works is being drawn up and I will advise the Deputies when it is finalised.

The funding for fishery harbours development in 1999 will fall to be settled through the normal budgetary and Estimates processes. I have, however, indicated my commitment to seeking the additional funding required for the develop- ment of Killybegs Fishery Harbour Centre.

Applications from local authorities for funding for fishery harbour development are received on an ongoing basis, in light of the resources avail- able. The Deputies will appreciate, however, that a process of priorisation, which directs the avail- able funding towards key fishing ports and the projects of greatest benefit to the industry, is necessary.
