Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Michael Ring

Question:

260 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will address the urgent problem of a sea wall collapsing on people's land and properties (details supplied) in west Mayo. [1858/98]

My Department has established from Mayo County Council that the sea wall in question is along a private road.

Primary responsibility for coastal protection lies with the property owner. The limited funding provided under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services, 1994-1999, is only available for works designed primarily to protect publicly owned property. In these circumstances, I regret that funding is not available for the direct protection of private property.
