Written Answers. - Charitable Donations.
Under the Vote for International Co-operation Irish charities can apply for funding under the various schemes operated by the Department under the bilateral aid programme. Annual amounts by programme in the period 1990-98 are indicated in the following table. Information on individual grants is published in the relevant annual reports of Irish Aid.
Since 1990, an annual sum has been approved under the Vote for Foreign Affairs to assist voluntary groups in the US, and since 1996 in Australia, working with Irish emigrants there. The services provided by these organisations include information, advice and assistance on issues such as residency status, citizenship, employment, accommodation, social services entitlements, etc. Details of annual funding follow: 1990, £200,000; 1991, £200,000; 1992, £51,000; 1993, £150,000; 1994, £150,000; 1995, £150,000; 1996, £180,000; 1997, £186,000; 1998, Nil to date.
The organisations supported by this funding include: Project Irish Outreach, New York; Emerald Isle Immigration Center, New York; Irish Immigraton Center, Boston; FOIR, San Francisco; Southern Calfornia Irish Network, Los Angeles; Gaelic Immigration Assistance, Philadelphia; Australian-Irish Welfare Bureau, Melbourne; Irish Welfare Bureau, Sydney.
Also within the Vote for Foreign Affairs, a subhead for North-South and Anglo-Irish co-operation was set up in 1982 to assist organisations nvolved in reconciliation work and in efforts to reate better understanding between people in oth parts of Ireland and between Ireland and ritain. Details of annual funding follows: 1991, £200,000; 1992, £115,000; 1993, £115,000; 1994, £240,000; 1995, £346,000; 1996, £246,000; 1997, £246,000; 1998 to date, Nil.
