Question:

378 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Defence the cost in 1997 of United Nations missions involving personnel operating under the aegis of his Department; the breakdown of this cost; the amount claimed in this regard; and the repayment received. [1331/98]

The cost of Defence Forces participation in United Nations missions in 1997 is £22.3 million approximately, comprising £14.3 million approximately for normal pay and allowances and £8 million in respect of extra costs, chiefly overseas allowances, cost of telephone calls and postage, temporary promotions, travel on leave and preparation of contingents. Ireland is entitled to a total annual reimbursement of approximately £6 million in respect of participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the only missions for which we qualify for reimbursement. Reimbursement of £8.2 million approximately was received from the United Nations in 1997 in respect of these missions. This sum included an element of arrears relating to previous years.
