Brian O'Shea

Question:

379 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Defence the expenditure, current and capital, if any, expended on Gormanston and Castleblayney posts; the nature of this expenditure for each of the years from 1995 and the proposed expenditure in 1998; and the categories and numbers of civilian staff, full or part-time, employed in both these posts. [1332/98]

A total of £500,000 approximately was spent on building and engineering works at Gormanston Camp and Castleblayney military post in the period 1995 to 1997. This amount included expenditure in respect of (a) at Castleblayney, replacement of the gymnasium floor and the construction of a new officers' mess (1995); (b) at Gormanston Camp, the refurbishment of a cookhouse (ongoing 1995-97); laying tarmacadam (ongoing 1995-97); changeover to natural gas (1995); pipework fittings (1997); and repairs to aviation fuel tanks (ongoing during 1995-97). In addition local maintenance and repair works were carried out at both military posts during the period.

While no specific projects are proposed for commencement at the above-mentioned locations under the building and engineering programme for 1998, normal maintenance will be undertaken as required.

There are 17 civilian employees at Gormanston Camp in the following categories: barrack foreman, carpenter, electrician, painter, bricklayer, plumber, general operative, pioneer, storekeeper, telecommunications technician and kitchen and mess helper.

A carpenter and a general operative are employed at Castleblayney military post. All of the above civilian staff are employed in a full-time capacity.
