381 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline, further to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 129 of 17 December 1997, the number by rank of personnel assigned to the first line reserve in each of the years from 1996 to date in 1998; the criteria and conditions for this assignment; the reason no enlisted personnel have been assigned to the reserve since 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The number by rank of personnel assigned to the First Line Reserve in each of the years from 1996 to date in 1998 is as follows:

The criteria and conditions relating to the transfer of members of the Permanent Defence Force to the First Line Reserve are as prescribed in Defence Force Regulations R.1 in relation to officers and A.10 in relation to enlisted personnel. These regulations are made pursuant to provisions of the Defence Act, 1954. Copies of Defence Force regulations and amendments made thereto are forwarded to the Library, Houses of the Oireachtas, where they should be available for inspection.
