Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

Michael Noonan

Question:

493 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to suggestions being made that certain public servants in ESB, Telecom Éireann and local authorities, who had to work on an emergency basis over the Christmas 1997 period, should have the tax which was deducted from their wages in respect of this work rebated to them; if he will have arrangements made along these lines; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1226/98]

I would like to inform the Deputy that I appreciate the extra work carried out by many workers over the Christmas period. However, it is a matter for employers, rather than the general tax system to reward workers for extra effort.
