Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - PAYE Construction Workers.

David Stanton

Question:

503 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Finance the number of people on the PAYE income tax system and working in the construction industry for each of the years from 1980 to date in 1998. [1529/98]

The relevant information available is in respect of the numbers of employees in the building and civil engineering industry on the PAYE tax records of the Revenue Commissioners at 31 December of each year from 1991 to 1997. Comparable information is not available for earlier dates.

Following is the information requested in so far as it is available:

At 31 December

Numbers on record (rounded to nearest 100)

1991

35,000

1992

39,000

1993

38,900

1994

45,000

1995

50,400

1996

58,600

1997

64,700

The figures for 31 December 1996 and 31 December 1997 are provisional and subject to revision.
The figures given in the tables are based on the number of individuals recorded as having an employment in the building and civil engineering industry, regardless of whether there is income earned from any other source. They differ from the figure given in my reply to the Deputy on 4 November 1997 which related to the income tax year 1994-95 only and which was based on the numbers of tax units whose main source of income was from employment in the building and civil engineering industry for the income tax year 1994-95 — Official Report of 4 November 1997 Volume 482, Column 555 refers.
