Question:

564 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give the names of the chairperson and members of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland; the individual appointed as chief executive of the authority; the number of officers he has approved for appointment by the authority; and the estimated expenditure which has been approved for 1998. [1548/98]

The current membership of the board of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland is as follows:

Danny O'Hare, Chairman

President, Dublin City University;

Professor Cecily Kelleher

Professor of Health Promotion, University College, Galway;

James Kennedy

Managing director, Bausch & Lomb, Waterford;

Caroline Gill

Director, Consumers Association of Ireland;

Professor John Hannan

Former Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin

Darina Allen

Television presenter and food writer

William Fagan

Director, Office of Consumer Affairs

Ann Scanlon

President, Irish Veterinary Union.

The chief executive of the Food Safety Authority is Dr. Patrick Wall MB MVB MFPHM MRCVS. The Department of Health and Children is currently in discussion with the Food Safety Authority regarding the appointment of officers. Estimated expenditure by the Authority in 1998 is £2.238 million.
