Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Revaluation of Irish Pound.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

78 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Finance his views on the comments by the Bundes-bank Council Member, Herr Kuehbacher that a revaluation of the Irish Pound was conceivable in the context of setting EMU entry rates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1916/98]

It would not be appropriate for me to say anything about a revaluation of the Irish pound. As regards the euro conversion rate of the Irish pound, I have already said many times that the Government's intention is that Ireland joins EMU at an exchange rate that meets the needs of the economy in the fullest sense of the term, and that between now and decision day we will be keeping the issue under active review.
