Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Transport System.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

651 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason the Dublin Transportation Office have not set up a project group to examine and promote the use of heavy rail in the greater Dublin area in view of his Department's involvement in the Dublin Transportation Office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1454/98]

The integrated transport strategy for the greater Dublin area, set out in the final report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative, provides the overall framework for the future development of the transport system in Dublin. The Dublin Transportation Office has a general responsibility to co-ordinate and drive that strategy in co-operation with the implementing agencies concerned.

The particular proposal referred to in the question would be a matter for consideration either by Dublin Transportation Office on its own initiative or at the request of the Minister for Public Enterprise.
