Question:

717 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals for legislation being prepared under the auspices of her Department where heads have not been approved to date by Government; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1116/98]

I am at present developing proposals for broadcasting legislation (including digital broadcasting) in accordance with the proposals in An Action Programme for the Millennium and it is my intention to bring these proposals to Government during the course of 1998.

I am also addressing the issue of the protection of major domestic sporting events in the context of the transposition into Irish law of Article 3 (a) of Directive 97/36/EC adopted in June 1997 which amended the Television Without Frontiers Directive (89/552/EEC).

Tá Bille na Gaeilge á ullmhú faoi láthair. This Bill will provide a framework for the delivery of State services bilingually or through the medium of Irish.

Tá Bille na dTithe (Gaeltacht) (Leasú) á ull-mhú chomh maith. This Bill will give legislative effect to changes made in the housing grants administered by my Department under the Housing (Gaeltacht) Acts, 1929 to 1979, since 1982 and make the legislation more relevant to present-day needs.

The Heads of a National Inventory of Architectural Heritage Bill, providing for the establishment of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage on a statutory footing, are currently being prepared in my Department as part of a package to provide better protection for listed buildings.

The Heads of a National Parks and Historic Properties Bill, the purpose of which is to afford protection to national parks, gardens and historic properties, are currently being prepared in my Department.
