Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Financial Support for Music.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

730 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress to date on a programme to provide financial support for music in Europe as agreed at the Council of Ministers meeting on 24 November 1997; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1795/98]

The Council of Ministers, at its meeting on 24 November 1997, adopted conclusions on the role of music in Europe which had been developed by the Luxembourg Presidency. The Council invited the European Commission to take these conclusions into consideration in its development of a framework for future cultural action in the European Union under Article 128 of the Treaty. The Commission has undertaken to bring forward proposals for such a framework by 1 May 1998. Until I see what is proposed I am not in a position to comment.
