Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Victims.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

753 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the new steps, if any, he intends to take to support victims of crime in 1998. [1293/98]

Caring for the victims of crime occupies a central role in my overall policy. I have already started the process of consultation in relation to the production of a new charter for the victims of crime with the hosting of a major conference on this subject in Dublin Castle last month. This process of consultation will be continued, culminating in the publication of the new charter later in the year.

On a more specific level, a national steering committee on violence against women, chaired by my colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Mary Wallace, has recently been established and will be addressing a wide range of victim-related issues.
