Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

824 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason a £4,000 grant from lottery funds could not be used to fund a youth drop-in centre in Brookview community centre, in view of the fact that the need for this facility is evident and it would make a serious contribution to tackling the serious drug crisis which exists in the area. [2055/98]

The Deputy's office has confirmed that the centre in question is the Brookfield community centre and not the Brookview community centre as listed.

Brookfield community centre was allocated a grant of £4,000 in July 1997 under the recreational facilities scheme. However, my Department was subsequently informed that the works in question had already been completed with assistance from another source, South Dublin County Council, and that the centre then proposed using the grant allocation for an alternative proposal which, unfortunately, was outside the terms and conditions of the scheme. It was, therefore, not possible to accede to the centre's request. It was informed of this in December 1997.
