Written Answers. - Pre-School Facilities.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

857 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the urgent need for pre-school facilities at Brookfield in Tallaght, Dublin 24; whether an early start pre-school project will be sanctioned for the local primary school as demanded by parents, teachers and the local community; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1431/98]

Question:

931 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will include Loreto Junior primary school in the early start programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2068/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 857 and 931 together.

I am currently engaged with senior officials in my Department in planning for the national forum on early childhood education. My objective in holding the forum is to allow all groups with an interest in the area of early childhood education to put forward their views as to how best to co-ordinate and support the development of services in this area. The report of the committee established to monitor the progress of the early start pre-school programme will be available to me as part of this process.

The outcome of the forum will provide an important input into policy decisions on the future development of pre-school education services. I assure the Deputies that the needs of the schools referred to will be fully considered in this context of any future development of pre-school services.
