Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cashen River Study.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

121 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance when the hydrological and hydraulic study of the Cashen River will be placed in the Oireachtas Library; if he will make the necessary finance available to commence work on the scheme in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1280/98]

A copy of the interim report on the hydrological/hydraulic study on the Cashen River was placed in the Oireachtas Library on 9 January 1998. On the recommendation of the consultant who carried out the study, further research is necessary. This has now been commissioned and is due for completion next October. Until the study is finalised and until options are identified for maintenance of the scheme which would deal effectively with the siltation problems, no decision can be taken as to what special measures are to be adopted. The Commissioners of Public Works will, however, continue to carry out annual maintenance works on the Feale/Cashen and funds have been made available for these.
