Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Seán Haughey

Question:

246 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will deal with a serious problem of house break-ins, muggings and car thefts in the Fitzgibbon Street Garda district in Dublin 3 in view of the complaints made to Deputy Haughey by residents from Fitzroy Avenue; the action, if any, that is being done at a local and national level to tackle this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2438/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of the concerns of the residents and that the area is receiving the attention of mobile and foot patrols. A community garda is specifically assigned to the area and maintains ongoing contact with the residents. Local gardaí attend meetings of the residents' association and arrangements are also being made to have a sergeant from the community policing unit contact the association. I am assured by the Garda authorities that every effort will be made to reduce the number of incidents in the area.
