Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mounted Police.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

258 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether mounted police units should be introduced in Irish cities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2667/98]

The question of introducing a mounted police unit is being looked at in the context of the requirement for cost effective responses to the challenges facing the Garda and the potential for such a unit to form part of an integrated approach using existing policing methods — CCTV, foot, motor and air patrols.

The Garda authorities have examined the case for a Garda mounted police unit through a working group and this group completed its work in late 1997. Its findings are currently being assessed by my Department.
