Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - College of Europe.

Richard Bruton

Question:

264 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Ireland is the only country which does not provide a full scholarship for nationals attending College of Europe and, as a result, not all of the places allocated to Ireland are taken up; his views on whether this is a missed opportunity for Ireland; and if he will make a statement on funding for these students. [2396/98]

The provision of scholarships to the College of Europe varies considerably from country to country to the extent that some countries award full or part scholarships or in some cases do not make a provision for their award.

In recognition of the contribution the college makes to the process of European integration, the Department of Education and Science awards full scholarships to three positions allocated to Irish nationals which covers the cost of fees and lodging for these students.

A provision is made in the allocation of places to Irish nationals for students other than those who receive scholarships to attend the college which serves to strengthen the level of Irish participation in the process.
