Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

277 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Education and Science when building work will commence at Scoil Íde, Corbally, Limerick to replace nine unsuitable prefabricated buildings which are in serious disrepair in view of the commitment given by his predecessor at the beginning of June 1997 that moneys had been set aside for this building and tender documents would be issued within 12 to 14 weeks from that time; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the teachers are currently considering withdrawing from the school due to the condition of the outdated temporary classrooms. [2524/98]

Tender documentation for the proposed extension at Scoil Íde, Corbally, Limerick is currently being finalised. This process will be completed within the next few weeks. At that point, tenders can be invited. Subject to a satisfactory tender process and the lodgement of the local contribution within my Department, a contract will then be awarded. It is difficult to estimate at this stage when building work will commence, but I assure the Deputy of my Department's commitment in providing improved accommodation at Scoil Íde at the earliest opportunity. I am disappointed to learn that the teachers are considering withdrawing from the school in view of my Department's commitment.
