Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Liz McManus

Question:

74 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress, if any, which has been made in regard to the preparation of a national road safety strategy; when it is expected that the report of the high level group chaired by his Department will be received; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2462/98]

Jack Wall

Question:

83 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the new proposals, if any, he has to deal with the increase in road traffic accidents and particularly road accidents resulting in deaths. [2456/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 74 and 83 together.

It is intended that the proposals of the high level group on road safety for a national road safety strategy will be finalised in the spring, prior to the approval of the strategy by the Government. The new strategy will provide a framework for co-ordinating and reinforcing existing policies and measures on road safety and for developing new instruments and approaches.

In the meantime, action on road safety is being intensified through, for example, special enforcement campaigns under the direction of the Garda National Traffic Policy Bureau, a substantially increased grant in 1998 to the National Safety Council and an increased provision by the National Roads Authority for its low cost safety measures programme.
