Question:

111 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when an inspector called to examine the damaged equipment belonging to persons (details supplied) in north Mayo which had been destroyed by large trawlers; and when will the inspector's report be finalised. [2698/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 110 and 111 together.

Compensation claims arising from the incidents in question are currently being mediated and verified by a sea fishery officer of my Department within the framework of the code of practice for inshore fishermen and trawlermen which was introduced to minimise the risk to local fishing gear from trawling activities and to facilitiate compensation in cases of verifiable gear losses. I hope an agreed and equitable settlement can be achieved shortly in this particular case.
