Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Births to Foreign Nationals.

Ivor Callely

Question:

170 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of non-English foreign nationals that have given birth in Irish hospitals for 1997 and to date in 1998; the comparative figures for the years 1995, 1993 and 1991; the issues of concern that have been brought to his attention regarding these births; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2423/98]

Data on the nationality of mothers giving birth in Ireland are not routinely collected by my Department.

My Department is aware from hospital managements that there has been some increase in the number of non-national mothers presenting in the Dublin maternity hospitals. However, relative to the general increase in maternity hospital activity which is being experienced at present, I understand that this does not represent a significant proportion of the increased activity.

I am not aware that there are issues of concern in regard to the health of the mothers and infants. If there are issues of a non-health nature, which the Deputy wishes to raise, they may be more appropriately asked of the relevant Ministers.
