Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Ivor Callely

Question:

82 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children that have been denied the necessary special supports or accommodation in special classes in the current school term in the Dublin 1, 3, 5 and 9 areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3490/98]

Data on the number of children awaiting special supports or accommodation in special classes in the areas referred to by the Deputy is not readily available.

A range of responses is available to support children who have been identified as having special education needs. In some cases, the children are capable of being accommodated in ordinary primary or second-level schools, with the help where necessary of remedial, resource or visiting teachers.

In cases involving more serious disabilities, placement in a special school or a special class attached to an ordinary school, may be the most appropriate response. The special schools and special classes can cater for children from four to 18 years and operate on the basis of specially reduced pupil teacher ratios. A range of such facilities is provided.
Referrals for placement in special schools and special classes must be supported by psychological and other professional assessments.
If the Deputy has a particular area of difficulty in mind, he may wish to provide particulars to my Department so that the matter can be further investigated.
