Question:

152 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the amount of funding provided by his Department in each of the years from 1994 to 1997 to private abattoir owners for upgrading in response to EU directives and if he will provide funding in 1998 or in the near future to help the owners to further upgrade their premises. [4075/98]

A limited grant aid scheme was introduced in December 1994 under the Food Sub-Programme of the Operational Programme for Industrial Development to assist the upgrading of certain abattoir premises to the full standards of Council Directive 64/433/EEC as amended by Council Directive 91/497/EEC.

Details of the amounts awarded to applicants under the scheme are as follows:

The closing date for applications under the scheme was 31 December 1995. It has not been possible to provide for further grant aid from the resources available to my Department.
