Question:

268 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide a breakdown of road fatalities for each of the years 1996 and 1997 in relation to pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists, pillion passengers, motor car drivers, motor car front seat passengers, motor car back seat passengers and others; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3995/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 267 and 268 together.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that statistics regarding road traffic accidents are not compiled by them in such a way as to readily provide the details which the Deputy requests.

However, details in relation to all road traffic accidents reported to the Garda authorities are supplied by the Garda to the National Roads Authority, St. Martin's House, Waterloo Road, Dublin 4. A detailed report on road accidents entitled Road Accident Facts is prepared and published annually by that authority. The most recent report, which is in respect of 1996, was published in October of last year and is available directly from the authority (Telephone (01) 6602511 or Fax (01 668009).
