Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Discipline.

Richard Bruton

Question:

291 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has assessed the case of a suspension of two students from a school (details supplied); and if he can intervene in any way in an effort to resolve the apparent impasse. [3797/98]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy. Discipline matters in schools are the responsibility of the managerial authorities of individual schools. Generally, my Department does not get involved in decisions made by school authorities in this matter.

A full report has been received from the school in this case. A complaint was made to the board of management of the school in question alleging that another named pupil of the school had been assaulted while travelling home on the school bus. Following detailed consideration and investigation into the incident, two pupils were suspended from the school. Before arriving at its decision, the board met with parents of both pupils. It would appear that full and proper procedures were followed by the board and that the rules of natural justice were applied. In addition, the board offered counselling to the pupils for the period of their suspension.

The current position is that the board will consider readmitting the pupils concerned upon receipt of a written undertaking countersigned by their parents in relation to their future behaviour. Arrangements are being made to involve my Department's inspectorate in the case with a view to ensuring that the parents and pupils fully understand the position of the board and the pupils resume their education as soon as possible.
