329 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at primary and second level who have applied for early retirement; the number of these which have been successfully processed; the reasons for the delay in processing the original applications; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A total of 154 primary teachers and 158 second level teachers have applied for early retirement since the introduction of the early retirement scheme for teachers in autumn 1996. I can confirm that processing has been completed in the case of all primary teachers and in the case of all but 15 second level teachers.
