Question:

97 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the total amount of fines imposed and collected in 1996 and 1997 for illegal fishing; if he will provide a breakdown of the nationality of the foreign registered vessels that are recorded for illegal fishing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4045/98]

Fines amounting to £1,341,000 were imposed by the courts in respect of fishing offences in 1996 and the amount of fines collected in that year was £780,000. Data in respect of 1997 are being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

The following table provides a breakdown of foreign fishing vessels detained during 1996-97 by either the Naval Service or the Department of the Marine for alleged fishery offences.
