Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Investment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

98 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the likely development and investment in the fishing industry over the next three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4046/98]

Some £23 million in EU funds under the fisheries operational programme is supporting a total investment of over £140 million in the fishing industry up to the end of 1999. This investment is targeted at maintaining and strengthening the fishing industry's contribution to the economy and to growth and employment in the coastal communities. This is being achieved through specific investment programmes for the fleet, fishery harbour development, fish processing, marketing, training and research.

The situation in relation to EU Structural Funds for all sectors, including fisheries, post-1999 will be the subject of negotiations between Ireland and the EU Commission in the coming months.
