Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Waste Levels.

Richard Bruton

Question:

115 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will give details of his current projections for the years 2000 and 2010 for the volumes of domestic, industrial and construction waste, nationally and in Dublin; and the way in which these volumes compare with those which prevailed in 1990 and in the most recent year for which information is available. [4474/98]

The establishment and maintenance of data bases of information on the environment, and the dissemination of such information, is a matter for the Environmental Protection Agency under section 52 of the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992. The most up-to-date comprehensive information available in relation to quantities of waste is contained in the National Waste Database Report 1995 published by the agency. A copy of the report is available in the Oireachtas Library.

Local authorities are required under section 22 of the Waste Management Act, 1996, to make waste management plans indicating, inter alia, the type, quantity and origin of waste arising in the functional area of each authority. The information available in relation to waste quantities arising and projected to arise in the Dublin area is contained in a document “Waste Management: A Strategy for Dublin” published last month by Dublin Corporation.
