Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Public Sector Transfer Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

82 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Defence the reason he is refusing to transfer a person's service with the Defence Forces (details supplied) to his current employer (details supplied) under the public sector transfer scheme; and if he will waive the suggested payment to the Department on the grounds that this person cannot repay it. [4449/98]

The public sector transfer scheme provides for the transfer of service for superannuation purposes between participating organisations. One of the conditions of the scheme is that, where a person has previously been paid a lump sum payment in respect of service in a particular organisation, that service cannot be transferred to another organisation unless the person concerned agrees to repay the amount of the lump sum, together with compound interest.

The person in question was paid a gratuity on his discharge from the Defence Forces and has been informed that the transfer of this service to Irish Fertilizer Industries is conditional on his agreeing to repay the gratuity together with compound interest. Despite several reminders, he has failed to confirm his agreement to this condition.
