Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospital Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

233 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will allocate additional funding to St. Raphael's, Celbridge, Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, in view of the fact that the allocation for 1998 is totally inadequate to meet the needs of the clients most in need; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5167/98]

The 1998 allocation to the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God for services to persons with a mental handicap included additional funding of £250,000 specifically for existing services in St. Raphael's, Celbrige.

In addition revenue funding of £3 million has been allocated to the Eastern Health Board region for new service developments in 1998 based on the priorities to be identified by the Central Mental Handicap Planning Committee, which includes representation from the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God. I understand from the board that while their proposals in relation to the development of new services in 1998 are still being finalised, it is anticipated that the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God will also be allocated a portion of this funding for new service developments.
