Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Racism in Sport.

Bernard Allen

Question:

258 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the strategies, if any, he is adapting to combat racism in sport. [5254/98]

The Deputy will agree that, fortunately, sport in Ireland is not characterised by problems of racism. However, my overall strategy for sport includes encouraging the promotion of standards of good conduct and fair play in sport. In this context, the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport in Ireland, which is promulgated by my Department, expects national governing bodies to ensure that all children are treated in an equitable and fair manner regardless of age, ability, sex, religion, social and ethnic background or poitical persuasion.
