Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

127 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the proposals, if any, he has for the future utilisation of Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare; his intentions with particular reference to the continued operation of the Army Apprenticeship School; the role, if any, he anticipates this barracks will play in the development of Army facilities in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4992/98]

Phase 1 of the Defence Forces review implementation plan proposes a revised training structure for all aspects of military training and it is proposed that the current system of apprentice training will be reviewed in that context. My Department has no proposals involving the Army Apprenticeship School, Naas. However, apprentice training is kept under review and was considered most recently in the context of the Efficiency Audit Review Group review of the Defence Forces.

A total of 42 apprentices are currently assigned to the Army Apprentice School in Devoy Barracks, Naas.
